Fourcountryregion Bodensee - A business venue shows profile

Who doesn’t know it? The international Fourcountryregion Bodensee with the neighbouring countries Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria, the region with the incomparably beautiful landscape, culture and history. Just to name a few highlights: the Flower Island of Mainau, St. Gallen and the Island of Reichenau with its UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites, the Uhldingen stilt houses, the “Council City” Constance, the Bregenz Festival, the Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau.

But who knows the business location of Lake Constance? Who thinks of companies such as Nestlé-Maggi, ALCAN, Georg Fischer or Schiesser, of ZF, MTU, Zeppelin, Dornier or EADS, of Wolford, Zumtobel, Hilti or Arbonia Forster, when one speaks of Lake Constance? The Lake Constance region has a positive but also very one-sided image – the image of a relaxation-, leisure- and holiday region. Glittering blue water, snow-capped mountains on the horizon and vineyards, fruit trees and vegetable plantations all around! These are some of dominating images that mark the profile of the international Lake Constance region. As strange as it may sound: it is precisely because of its beautiful landscape and its attractiveness for tourists and those seeking relaxation that the Lake Constance region has, to date, been insufficiently recognised as an international business region.

Tourism is most certainly a significant economic factor. And yet it is only one of several pillars in the business structure of the region. A closer look at the economic structure reveals certain core expertise fields and clusters that stand for high technological competence and innovative strength with significant growth potential and attractive future prospects.

Over the course of economic- and technological developments in the past decades, and the accompanying structural change, certain innovative technological fields have crystallised in the Fourcountryregion Bodensee. This process has been supported through targeted promotion of technology-oriented start-ups and the highly successful development of the higher education institutions. In addition to the large industrial enterprises that have been located in the region for a long time, smaller- and medium-sized enterprises have become important drivers in the creation of jobs and traineeships.

The core expertise of the Fourcountryregion Bodensee today lies in the following fields:

  • environmental technology *
  • life sciences & biotechnology *
  • nanotechnology *
  • packaging technology *
  • aerospace technology *
  • mobility technology
  • engineering
  • ICT technology
  • food production
  • tourism

The targeted promotion of these major fields and the communication of the existing potential and many advantages of the business venue – which, in addition to companies and higher education institutions, include an excellent infrastructure (e.g. the proximity to the airports Friedrichshafen and Zurich, connection to the German Federal, Swiss and Austrian motorways), and the high quality of life – requires a focusing on these particularly productive technology- and sector areas.

As part of a differentiated cluster analysis, Bodensee Standort Marketing (Lake Constance Region Location Marketing – BSM) has made an indicatory selection. Based on the results of the analysis, the Cluster Initiative Lake Constance – CLIB has targeted the fields of environmental technology, life sciences & biotechnology, nanotechnology, packaging technology and aerospace technology since 2001. Parallel to this, further clusters have developed in the Fourcountryregion Bodensee.
